How Will the 2024 Convention Work?

Whether you are joining us in person in Philadelphia or attending remotely, we look forward to welcoming you to MLA 2024. Here are a few last-minute tips to help you make the most of your convention experience.

  • In-person sessions will be in the Marriott, the Loews, and the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The exhibit hall is in the Pennsylvania Convention Center as well as online.

  • Check out our list of exhibit hall events for information about refreshments (free coffee!), sessions, receptions, and other events in the exhibit hall.

  • Refer to the Virtual Sessions page for a streamlined list of sessions taking place online.
  • Visit the registration and welcome center (Pennsylvania Convention Center, Grand Hall, Level 2) and grab a hot welcome beverage (4 Jan., 3:00–5:00 p.m.) while you check out the publication prize winners display, photo exhibit, and so much more!

  • Graduate students: want tips on navigating the convention and advice from locals on where to go in Philly? View a recording of our preconvention meet and greet for graduate students (use passcode 2Bfs^4Q?).

MLA Awards Ceremony

Join us at 7:15 p.m. on 5 January in the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown (Liberty, Level 2) as we celebrate the incredible work produced by our members in the past year. The ceremony will include remarks by award winners Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and W. J. T Mitchell.

Presidential Address

MLA President Frieda Ekotto will give the Presidential Address, “The Propitiatory Form: Léopold Sédar Senghor and the Art of Forgiveness,” on 6 January at 7:00 p.m. The address will consider Senghors work and the theme of forgiveness. Learn more.

Professional Development Hub

Visit the Professional Development Hub in the Pennsylvania Convention Center (room 201) for discussions about professional issues, one-on-one mentoring, and special sessions for graduate students. And remember to check out our curated session lists.

Advocate for the Humanities

Paula M. Krebs speaks with a dean, a government relations officer, and the deputy director of the National Humanities Alliance about how to make a better case for humanities programs with administrators, funders, and legislators.

Chat with an Editor

Experienced journal editors will be available on Friday for consultation and to offer advice to editors and scholars who have questions about publishing processes. Early-career scholars are particularly welcome.
